Reading Time: 2 minutes
Welcome to day 4 of The Brilliantly Visible Challenge where we will be setting up your Google Search Console (GSC). In case you aren’t familiar with this free Google tool – it gives you an insight to how Google views your website, details about your data configuration as well as the keywords your visitors are using to find you online. You can also see errors on your website like broken pages, how your website is being crawled by Google (so your website is being found) and if you have any penalties for not following best practice. I personally have a look at my Google Search Console account every morning to see if there is anything I need to take action on in case of an emergency and I highly recommend that you do the same. Once you get used to the interface and you know what you are looking for, it will take you less than 20 minutes to make sure everything is OK.
Today’s tutorial is in screenshots as I have had to remove tracking information for my account for security reasons. You should still be able to follow it easily but please do let me know if you have any questions.
ENTER IN YOUR URL INTO THE WELCOME SCREEN
Make sure that you enter the right version of your website depending on how you have it set up. There is a difference between https and http (one has a SSL certificate, the other doesn’t) as well as www vs non www. Your website should be set up with one way to access it, if you have multiple ways, you can have an issue with duplicate content that needs to be resolved.
VERIFY YOUR WEBSITE
The next step is to verify your website by adding some code. There are several options available and I always find the easiest way is to add the HTML tag into the homepage. I’ll show you how I did in the next screen shot but you should be able to find the settings in your theme.
ADD YOUR CODE TO YOUR HEADER SCRIPTS
Once you’ve found where to add the code, it’s really easy. Simply put it in the headers script section (the first one) and save.
VERIFY THE SCRIPT IN YOUR GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE ACCOUNT
Now all you need to do is go back to your Google Search Console account and verify that the code has been entered correctly. Once this has been done, your account is ready to collect information for you.
We will leave your Google Search Console account to run as it is but do keep an eye out for new blogs coming out about making the most of your Search Console account.
